Clothing Store for Kids

The first Sunday of Advent Mission: PWA-Sedgefield Clothing Store

PWA-Sedgefield Clothing Store

Beginning November 28, 2021

The Presbyterian Women of Avondale (PWA) have a partnership with Sedgefield Middle School. Recently they shared with us the newly approved initiative to have a "clothing store" at the school, available to all of the children free of charge. Having clean and weather appropriate clothing has been an ongoing issue at the school for some time. They currently have 19 children that fall into the "McKinney–Vento" category* and are receiving federal assistance; however, others do not qualify but still have many needs and this would help meet a few of those.

So far, other partners have supplied a new washer and dryer, laundry detergent, clothing racks and funds for new undergarments and socks. Moving forward, the school’s In Reach Committee will be looking for donations of gently used clothing and offering sign-up opportunities to come help sort, wash and organize clothing in the store. They are very excited about this project and are hopeful it will help restore dignity and confidence in the children.

If you would like to donate gently used adult and junior/youth (not preschool) size clothing, you can drop these items off to the church office, Monday through Friday 9 AM - 4 PM. There is an expected shortage of men's and women's larger sizes (XL-XXL) should you be interested in purchasing any new items and are wondering what to look for. They will not be accepting any used socks, undergarments, or bras.

If you have never heard of the McKinney-Vento Act, search that term for quick results.
